Alexandra Mawimbi — Visual Artist

A softly lit artist portrait in warm sepia and deep burgundy tones, with a contemplative mood and shallow depth of field

Alexandra Mawimbi is a visual artist whose practice spans two-dimensional work, sculpture, video, performance, sound, and installation. Her work explores themes of identity, memory, and the body, drawing on personal and collective histories.

She has exhibited and performed internationally, with works presented in Berlin, Brussels, Nairobi, Bayreuth, and New York. Her approach is interdisciplinary, moving fluidly between media to examine the intersections of culture, queerness, and representation.

  • October 28, 2016 Winner of the Smithsonian First Annual African Art Award.
  • 2015 Live documentation of Untitled derivative of Mshoga Mpya, or the New Homosexual filmed as part of the African Odysseys exhibition, curated by Marie-Ann Yemsi, in Brussels.
