The rainbow flag has come to represent LGBT movements globally. However while living in Nairobi, Abe found that this flag was not as inclusive and representational for her life experience. Because homosexual acts are still illegal in Kenya, and there is still a lot of stigma surrounding homosexuality, Abe found it difficult to identify with the flag while she was dealing with issues of her own personal safety and security. This piece questions whether an African woman who has same-sex desires in Kenya is automatically identifiable with the word “lesbian” or with the international LGBT community. This work was made in collaboration with photographer, Daniel Jack Lyons.
